Questions for Videos
How did the teacher make sure that the students were able to demonstrate their thinking, answer the question?
No right or wrong answers. Teacher built off the questions and answers of the students. She had some predetermined questions prepared for the students. She made the students support their answers by asking them "why". They all had to explain their reasoning.
What are some features of the learning environment that support this questioning?
The students knew the ground rules of the discussion. The students were seated in a circle...facing each other. They were comfortable with each other.
How does asking higher order thinking questions and eliciting explanations improve students’ learning?
You learn from other people's viewpoints. Get to see different ways of thinking. Using a picture evens the playing field for all levels of learners. Students were able to reflect on their own responses.
How do you ensure a culture that engages every student, every question, every time?
You have to value different ways thinking. You have to teach students how to support other opinions/viewpoints/ideas. Provide students with an environment where they feel safe to share their thoughts. Give expectation that everyone must participate/contribute something...everyone is held accountable. The type of questions/activities must lend to eliciting different types of responses from the students....not just one right answer. So when a student responds the thinking and learning doesn't stop...but triggers other responses/ways of thinking from the other students.
